H.E. Kashim Shettima

His Excellency Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, is the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, an agricultural economist, former banking executive and experienced public administrator. He assumed office on 29 May 2023, following his election alongside President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His professional and political career spans banking, public administration, legislative service and executive governance.

His professional career began in academia as a lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Maiduguri before he ventured into banking in 1993. He worked with the Commercial Bank of Africa Limited and African International Bank Limited, where he held various managerial positions. He subsequently joined Zenith Bank Plc in 2001 as Head of its Maiduguri Branch and rose through the ranks to become General Manager in 2007, overseeing significant banking operations in Nigeria's North-East region.

In 2007, he entered public service following his appointment as Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development in Borno State. He subsequently served as Commissioner in several ministries, including Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Education, Agriculture and Health. In 2011, he was elected Governor of Borno State and secured re-election in 2015, serving two consecutive terms until 2019. His administration pursued educational development, infrastructure rehabilitation and humanitarian interventions during a period marked by the Boko Haram insurgency. He also served as Chairman of the Northern States Governors' Forum during his second term.

Following his tenure as Governor, Senator Shettima was elected to the Nigerian Senate in 2019, representing Borno Central Senatorial District. He served in the National Assembly until 2023, when he became Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

As Vice President, he chairs the National Economic Council (NEC), which coordinates economic planning and policy implementation between the Federal Government and the states. He also serves as Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC). In these capacities, he contributes to national economic policy coordination, infrastructure development, public sector reforms and investment promotion.

Senator Shettima holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Maiduguri and a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan. He is a recipient of the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), one of Nigeria's highest national distinctions.

His Excellency Kashim Shettima brings extensive experience in financial management, economic policy and governance to national leadership. He continues to play a significant role in advancing the Federal Government's economic development priorities, strengthening intergovernmental cooperation and promoting sustainable national development.
